If you are looking for a reliable small car that is good on fuel then the Yaris certainly fits the bill. Whilst not startling performance, the 1.3 vvti won't set the world on fire but will keep up fine with everyday traffic, the smaller engined ones will struggle to get up hills without dropping down a gear (or two). The engine is quiet and refined with the usual Toyota bullet proof reliability and can return over 60 MPG if the digital dash readout is to be believed. The latest models come with a 6 speed manual altough the older 5 speed manuals are every bit as good. No need to fear the automatic transmission either as again the Toyota reliability comes into play and they will go the distance with ease.
Interior is spacious, exceptionally so on the now discontinued Verso model and whilst the usual Japanese slightly bland hard plastic and functional rather than stylish look to it is by no means offensive and is very well put together and no rattles considering how much hard plastic is used. Seats are comfortable and supportive and the boot space is good for a car this size.
The Yaris Verso is a favourite with older drivers as it is very easy to get in and out of due to it's increased height and it's only flaw is that it is not very good in a crosswind, the light weight and high sides mean it is a struggle to keep under control in high winds, the standard Yaris does not suffer from this, just the Verso.
Toyota owners tend to be sensible carefull drivers in the main so picking up a good used Yaris is not the usual lottery, my best advice would be to always go for the ones that are made in Japan, some were assembed in the UK and some in France but I have driven all manner of Toyotas over the years and it's been my experience that the ones made in Japan never give any trouble where the others suffer from niggley problems, with the Japanese cars you are far less likely to get a 'Monday morning car'.
In fact there is every chance you will forget what it's like to have to buy parts for a car, I've had mine 9 years and apart from normal servicing I've only ever put 2 tyres on it.
Insurance is cheap - group 3-5, is also low on emmissions so tax is cheap as well.
If you are looking for a small, reliable car then you have to check out Yaris
Advantages: Bulletproof reliability, excellent MPG
Disadvantages: Interior bland and plasticy
